Bilingual and ProudMilwaukee Student Gustavo Martínez Awarded “Best Essay” Award by National Association for Bilingual EducationA Web Exclusive In February, Gustavo Martínez, a student at Allen-Field Elementary School in Milwaukee, was awarded the "best essay" prize by the National Association for Bilingual Education. Martínez is enrolled in the Milwaukee Public School's Bilingual Gifted and Talented Program, which is located at Allen-Field Elementary School on the south side. The program is taught and organized by Betty Keller. Students are recommended to the program on the basis of their academic achievement from 15 bilingual elementary schools in the city. "We have students in grades 3, 4 and 5 and the rate of success is phenomenal," says Keller. Proud to be Bilingual By Gustavo Martínez I have a super gift that will last a lifetime. That super gift is to be bilingual and it is a gift for many reasons. One is that I can help many people in my family. I can use my Spanish and English in many places. Being bilingual will also help me in many ways when I grow up. I can have a better job and also a better life. Translating is one of the super gifts of being bilingual. Translating is a gift that I can use in school, at home and in many places. At home I can help my older brother with some words that he does not understand in English. I also help my Dad and friends when they need me. My Dad asks me to help him in English when he receives a letter from his doctor. This makes me feel proud and important. I can us my English skills anyplace and at anytime. There are many places I can use my two languages; at the restaurants, grocery stores or at the airport. In school I work on many projects in both English and Spanish. I must try my personal best to know these languages well. Everyday brings me closer to fulfill my future goal. When I grow up I want to have a happy life and a career in which I can use English and Spanish. I want to have a career in the military. It's important to help with world peace. I want to be in a S.W.A.T. team. They are given many special assignments in the government. I want to have a lot of friends by my side. I am blessed and proud to be bilingual. It's the best gift I could have received from my parents. I am able to help many people everyday. I can have a richer life when I grow up. Bilingualism is all about me! __ Orgulloso de ser Bilingüe Gustavo Martínez Yo tengo un regalo increíble que durara toda la vida. Ese regalo increíble es ser bilingüe y lo es por muchas razones. Una razón es qué puedo ayudar a mis familiares. Yo puedo usar mi inglés y español en cualquier lugar que yo vaya. Siendo bilingüe me va a ayudar cuando crezca. Yo puedo tener un buen trabajo y también una mejor vida. Traducir es uno de los regalos increíbles de ser bilingüe. Yo puedo traducir en la escuela, en mi casa y en casi todos los lugares que voy. En mi casa ayudo a mi hermano mayor con palabras que a veces no entiende en inglés. Yo también puedo ayudar a mi papá y a sus amigos cuando me necesitan. Mi papá me pide ayuda cuando recibe alguna carta médica. Esto me hace sentir orgulloso e importante. Yo puedo usar mis habilidades de inglés y español en cualquier lugar y tiempo. Hay muchos lugares en que puedo usar mis dos idiomas. Yo uso mi regalo increíble en los supermercados, restaurantes, y en los aeropuertos. En mi escuela trabajo en muchos proyectos en los cuales tengo que usar mi español y también el inglés. Trato siempre de superarme y hacer el mejor trabajo para comprender estos dos idiomas muy bien. Cada día me acerco más a realizar mi meta en el futuro. Cuando yo crezca quiero tener una vida feliz y una carrera en que pueda usar los dos idiomas. Yo he escogido tener una carrera militar. Es importante para poder contribuir con la paz mundial. Por esta razón quiero ser parte de un equipo llamado S.W.A.T. Este equipo es una rama del Departamento de Policía. A estos miembros, el gobierno les asigna muchas misiones peligrosas que arriesgan sus vidas. Para mi es muy importante tener muchos amigos a mi lado que me apoyen en mi metas. Me siento bendecido y muy orgulloso de ser bilingüe. Es el mejor regalo que haya podido recibir de mis padres. Me siento capacitado de poder ayudar a muchas personas diariamente. De ésta manera yo puedo tener una vida llena de muchas cosas buenas. ¡Ser bilingüe es todo acerca de mí! -- |
