Seeing Things as They Truly AreAbout eight years ago I was sitting on a sandy hill overlooking a spectacular sunset over the Pacific Ocean. Next to me, a middle-aged man stared north, his face and body weighed down by the singular importance of that moment in his life. Before dawn, he said, he would make a final attempt to cross the U.S.-Mexican border in search of his American dream. If he failed, he would return to his small Mexican town and live out the rest of his days. If he succeeded, he would try and land a job in California and save money to help his family. ![]() I never saw him again, but as I sat there with him that evening and joined his gaze over the rusted border fence to the U.S., it struck me how vastly different everything - and everyone - looks when you peer at them from across a real or imagined fence. Borders don't just keep people apart, I realized, they also distort what's on the other side. They keep you from seeing things as they really are On April 11, the United Community Center' Latino Arts and Marquette University's Haggerty Museum unveil a collection of artworks showing the complex, ever-changing immigrant experience the way only art can: with beauty, creativity and heart. See some exclusive images from that exhibit, "Caras Vemos, Corazones No Sabemos," in our story on pg. 30. Also, check out our Connected section for news, humor and stories about people and programs making a positive difference in Southeast Wisconsin. This is also our 3rd Annual Education issue. In it, we feature some exceptional young Latinos in universities; a guide to obtaining scholarship money; a list of the most popular colleges for Hispanics in Southeast Wisconsin; this year's four Education Award winners; plus a profile on UWM Chancellor Carlos Santiago, the keynote speaker at the ¡Aquí! Milwaukee Education Awards luncheon on April 3. Please visit our Web site, www.aquimilwaukee.com, to buy a ticket to the luncheon. It'll be a great opportunity to meet the fast-growing community of ¡Aquí! Milwaukee readers. 'Til then. Raul Vasquez |
